Understanding KPIs

Dr. Ruba Almusallam  ·  Director of Clinical Education

KPIs, or Key Performance Indicators, are simple measurements that help us understand how well we are delivering safe, effective, and patient-centered care.

In healthcare, KPIs track patient safety indicators, waiting times, infection rates, patient satisfaction, and many other measures that reflect the quality of care we provide.

KPIs are not just numbers on a report. They are tools that guide us in making better decisions and improving our services. When departments regularly review their KPIs, they can identify trends, address challenges early, and implement solutions that enhance patient care and operational efficiency.

Another important role of KPIs is supporting compliance with healthcare standards and accreditation requirements. Many regulatory and accreditation bodies expect hospitals to track and improve key performance measures as part of maintaining high-quality and safe healthcare services.

Most importantly, KPIs work best when everyone is engaged. When staff understand the indicators related to their work and take part in reviewing and improving them, it creates a culture of continuous quality improvement. Small actions — such as following best practices, documenting accurately, or responding quickly to patient needs — can positively influence these indicators.

At the end of the day, every KPI tells a story about our patients and the care we provide. By paying attention to these measures and working together to improve them, we can continue to strengthen our services and ensure the best possible outcomes for the patients and families who trust us with their care.
