5 May 2026

LOTHAN Hospital celebrated World Hand Hygiene Day. Since 2009, the SAVE LIVES: Clean Your Hands campaign has continued to promote the importance of hand hygiene and infection prevention and control (IPC) in healthcare worldwide. The 2026 slogan, “Action Saves Lives,” highlights the critical role of proper hand hygiene in protecting patients, healthcare workers, and communities.

Objectives of WHHD 2026

  • Promoting optimal hand hygiene practices according to the WHO 5 Moments.
  • Strengthening the integration of hand hygiene within national IPC action plans and healthcare facility SOPs, raising awareness on hand hygiene compliance monitoring as a key IPC indicator.
  • Encouraging countries and healthcare organizations to take action to improve IPC practices in line with WHO recommendations.

Lothan Continuous Medical Education Program

CME

The program aims to enhance knowledge sharing and keep healthcare staff updated on recent trends and developments through the presentation of interesting cases, peer-reviewed studies, advances in medicine and surgery, updated diagnostic and management guidelines, and innovative procedures and protocols that support excellence in patient care.

CME of May

CME Session: Challenges in Managing Hemorrhoids
CME Session: High Blood Pressure - A Silent Killer

IT Department

CTO Dr. Ashkanani conducted a training session titled “Introduction to Lothan Hospital IT Ecosystem.” This session was designed to provide an overview of the hospital’s digital systems and tools, supporting staff in navigating and utilizing them effectively in daily practice.

International Patient Safety Goals

Within Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation, the International Patient Safety Goals include:

  1. Identify Patients Correctly
  2. Improve Effective Communication
  3. Improve the Safety of Medications
  4. Ensure Safe Surgery
  5. Reduce the Risk of Health Care–Associated Infections

Together, these goals serve as a structured framework to enhance patient safety and minimize risks across healthcare settings.

The second goal, Improve Effective Communication, consists of two subgoals:

IPSG.02.00 The hospital implements a process for reporting critical results of diagnostic tests.

IPSG.02.01 The hospital implements a standardized process for handover communication.

IPSG.02.00 Reporting of Critical Results

A Critical Result is defined as a variance from normal range that represents a pathophysiologic state that is high risk or life-threatening, is considered urgent or emergent, and in which immediate medical action is likely necessary to preserve life or prevent a catastrophic event. A formal reporting system is used throughout the hospital that clearly identifies how critical results of diagnostic tests are communicated to health care practitioners and how the information is documented and acted on.

IPSG.02.01 Standardized Process for Handover Communication

Handover Communications can also be referred to as handoff communications.

Handovers of patient care within a hospital occur in the following ways:

  • Between health care practitioners (for example, physician to physician, physician to nurse, nurse to nurse).
  • Between different levels of care in the same hospital (for example, when the patient is moved from an intensive care unit to a medical unit, or from an emergency department to the operating theatre).
  • From inpatient units to diagnostic or other treatment departments, such as radiology or physical therapy.
  • Between staff and patients/families, such as at discharge.

Privacy Matters

Local Shared Folders vs. OneDrive for Business

When discussing file storage solutions, privacy and data protection are among the most important considerations for any organization. Both Local Shared Folders and OneDrive for Business can protect sensitive information, but they do so in different ways.

📁
Local Shared Folders
Privacy through internal control

Company data is stored on servers located within the organization’s infrastructure, giving direct control over where data lives, who can access it, and how it is managed.

Privacy Benefits
  • Data remains within the organization’s environment.
  • Full control over access permissions and security policies.
  • No data is stored in external cloud platforms.
  • Suitable for organizations with strict regulatory or data residency requirements.
Privacy Challenges
  • Security depends entirely on the organization’s IT controls.
  • Accidental deletion or unauthorized access can occur if permissions are poorly managed.
  • Data may be vulnerable without effective backups, encryption, or monitoring.
  • Insider threats can be difficult to detect without advanced auditing tools.
☁️
OneDrive for Business
Privacy through enterprise security

Files are stored in Microsoft’s secure cloud environment while providing advanced security and privacy controls.

Privacy Benefits
  • Data encryption both in transit and at rest.
  • Multi-factor authentication (MFA) support.
  • Detailed audit logs and access tracking.
  • Granular sharing controls and permission management.
  • Data loss prevention (DLP) and compliance features.
  • Automatic detection of suspicious logins and unusual activity.
Privacy Considerations
  • Data is stored in Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure.
  • External sharing must be carefully managed and governed.
  • Clear policies are needed for file sharing and access permissions.

Which Provides Better Privacy?

The answer depends on how the system is managed. A poorly secured local shared folder may expose sensitive information due to weak permissions, lack of monitoring, or insufficient backups. On the other hand, a properly configured OneDrive for Business environment can provide enterprise-grade security, auditing, encryption, and access controls that are often difficult and costly to implement on-premises.

Best Practice for Enterprises

Privacy is not only about where data is stored — it is about who can access it, how access is monitored, and how quickly security incidents can be detected and addressed.

Organizations should:

  • Apply the principle of least privilege.
  • Regularly review access permissions.
  • Enable multi-factor authentication.
  • Classify sensitive information.
  • Train employees on secure file-sharing practices.
  • Monitor and audit file access activities.

Whether using Local Shared Folders or OneDrive for Business, privacy is strongest when supported by proper governance, security controls, and user awareness.
